Hi! My name is Ian Kirkpatrick. I'm a spec and dark comedy author with interesting credentials: graduated with an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Tampa and a BA in Theater from the University of Alaska Anchorage. I've lived in a high desert, the frozen tundra, and the subtropics, so, I've got most extreme climates covered. The things I write can be as dramatically different as the places I've lived, though I tend the most toward black comedy and speculative fiction. I've worked on novels, short stories, stageplays, and screenplays.
I don't stick with one or two genres, though most things I write can fall into a speculative genre or tend toward dark comedy and satire. I've noticed a pattern in my stories and usually they feature either a naive person learning about the world, a rebel, or a psychopath. I'm obsessed with the good and evil in humans.
Once I was even told I ask the important questions like: Why is it a good thing to make a killing in the box office, but not the theater?
When I'm not writing, I spend time with my American Eskimo, Tatum, play video games like Outlast, Saints Row, and Borderlands, or explore unique wonders nearby. I enjoy ghost stories, though I don't believe in ghosts. I love abandoned and haunted buildings -- with my favorites being prisons, asylums, and hospitals.
My favorite color is yellow. Favorite animal is the bear (first grizzly, then polar, then black). Though give me bears, sharks, serial killers, robots, or gators and I'm happy. Right now, I'm living to accomplish two dreams: publish an array of interesting and entertaining stories and find my man to happily ever after with.
Wish me luck.
